On February 14 and 15, 2006, the Center on Instruction hosted a two-day workshop on the topic K-12 literacy. The training presented strategies for supporting literacy problems for average and struggling readers, and research-based strategies for literacy instruction and content enhancement. Presenters included Dr. Joe Torgesen and Dr. Marcia Kosanovich of the Florida Center for Reading Research, Dr. Nell Duke of Michigan State University and the Literacy Achievement Research Center, Dr. John Guthrie of the University of Maryland, and Dr. Keith Lenz of the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. - Briefs - short discussions on a topic, often with examples, and supported by research
- Presentations – PowerPoint files or video clips from presentations affiliated with Access Center, also includes relevant handouts
- Webinars – A webinar combines three methods of communication: phone, online presentation, and a chat window for typing questions

Research-Based Practices in Early Reading Series: A Focus on Vocabulary
In this booklet, the second in a series of major topics of beginning reading instruction, current research findings on the importance of vocabulary to comprehension, how children acquire vocabulary, and the most effective vocabulary strategies in supporting that acquisition are summarized. The authors support their conclusions with findings from the National Reading Panel Report, and studies conducted by other researchers in the field of vocabulary. They examine the depth and breadth of vocabulary learning necessary to affect comprehension, and look at several topics of interest to practitioners, such as how students learn new words, selecting types of words to teach, and effective strategies for teaching vocabulary.
