Big Dreams: A Family Book About Reading

The National Institute for Literacy, a federal agency, provides leadership on literacy issues, including the improvement of reading instruction for children, youth, and adults. It develops publications for families and educators of learners across the lifespan. This publication outlines 7 simple, sequential strategies parents can use to help their child become a reader.

 

Dad’s Playbook: Coaching Kids to Read

This publication provides some simple skills to help your kids be even better readers—like knowing what kinds of questions to ask when you’re reading a story together. It breaks down the “secrets” of being a great literacy coach with your kids.

 

A Child Becomes A Reader

This brochure tells what parents can do to help children ages 0-5 become readers. It includes suggestions about what to look for in day care centers and preschools, and a summary of scientific research on how children learn to read and write.
