The New York State Reading Academies offer teachers, reading specialists, literacy coaches and administrators information about evidence-based literacy instruction. The Academies are comprised of the Foundation Course, the Principal’s Academy, Interactive Learning Modules, the Data Course,  and the Literacy Coaching Academy. These offerings range from a 60-hour course in the foundations of effective reading instruction to the innovative Interactive Learning Modules that provide participants with the opportunity to learn from national experts and to share strategies for implementation of their new knowledge with colleagues from across the state in a facilitated online format. These professional development opportunities are designed to provide educators with the necessary knowledge to create dynamic classroom environments where students are offered quality literacy instruction responsive to their varying needs.

 Reading Academies: Foundation Course

Research shows that teachers learn best in activity-based professional development that takes place over an extended period of time, with quality peer interaction, supported by local coaches. The NYS Reading Academy’s blended format presents instructional materials in a way that is interactive and informative. The 60-hour Foundation Course combines online learning with facilitated group meetings, creating a collaborative learning community. Teachers develop a shared knowledge of evidence-based reading instruction, have opportunities to apply and practice proven strategies in their classroom, with feedback through peer and coach discussion.

 Reading Academies: Principal's Academy

This academy was developed to build general knowledge for principals initiating change in the area of reading, with a focus on the following:

  • differentiated professional development
  • tools for classroom walk-throughs
  • use of assessment, curriculum, instruction, and use of time
  • the critical importance of principal leadership

 Reading Academies: Interactive Learning Modules

The Interactive Learning Modules enable educators to experience a learning environment beyond the bounds of the classroom. This innovative approach will assist teachers, reading specialists, literacy coaches and administrators in the exploration of topics related to evidence-based reading in their own way and at their own pace. They are professional development tools developed in collaboration with national experts and researchers, presented using PowerPoint software, video clips, and aligned print teaching materials. Each Interactive Learning Module provides participants with the opportunity to join other educators through discussion forums that support and reflect upon their implementation of the knowledge gained in working through and applying the concepts examined in these modules.
